Irving John Good

Cari ragazzi e cari lettori, questo post è dedicato alla figura di un grande studioso di statistica, il matematico inglese  Irving John Good, che si è spento il 5 aprile scorso all’età di 92, in Virginia nella sua casa di Radford.

Good era di origine inglese, come ho scritto sopra, essendo nato il 9 dicembre 1916 in Gran Bretagna. Era chiamato anche Jack, ma il  suo nome originario è in realtà Isidore Jacob Gudak.
La sua fama è legata agli studi sulla probabilità, essendo riuscito a decifrare i codici nazisti, durante la seconda guerra mondiale,  grazie al sodalizio con Alan  Turing.


Infatti, dopo aver conseguito nel 1941 a Cambridge il PhD (Doctor of Philosophy, il più alto titolo accademico riconosciuto  internazionalmente e corrispondente al dottorato di ricerca italiano) viene inserito  nel gruppo di crittografi di Bletchley Park, un paese a circa 75 km a Nord-Ovest di Londra,  dove lavora in stretta collaborazione con il geniale Alan Turing, realizzando una prestigiosa carriera.


Lavora anche come sviluppatore nel centro di calcolo del computer Colossus, il primo elaboratore elettronico britannico in grado di forzare i codici sviluppati dalla macchina Enigma, ideata da Arthur Scherbius e usata dai tedeschi durante la seconda guerra mondiale.


Finita la seconda guerra mondiale, scrive parecchie pubblicazioni tecniche sulla probabilità e l'inferenza bayesiana, sia presso l'Università di Manchester che in altri ambiti accademici e per il Ministero della Difesa.


Il suo nome è spesso associato alla nozione di peso della testimonianza (weight of evidence), indicata con la notazione Ev(p) con la seguente corrispondenza


Ev(p) = 10 log10 p/(1-p).


Una rappresentazione la cui paternità Good negò sempre attribuendola  ad Alan Turing il quale l'aveva battezzata log-odds, e. in modo indipendente, ad altri ricercatori tra i quali Jeffreys.


È noto pure per la sua raccolta e aggiornamento delle partly-baked ideas: intuizioni che, pur non completamente formalizzate, gli sembravano promettenti. Svolse pure un ruolo fondamentale nell'associazione Mensa, per persone con un quoziente d'intelligenza particolarmente elevato.
Buon giocatore di scacchi, contribuì con un articolo del 1965 in New Scientist a rendere popolare il gioco asiatico Go le cui regole aveva appreso da Turing.
